Battlefield 2142 Vista / Punkbuster Disconnects

If your Battlefield game quits almost instantly under vista and you see the following message.

RESTRICTION: Inadequate O/S Privileges

This means you must start Battlefield 2142 as Administrator. There are two ways to do this.

  1. Right click on the icon and select “Run as Administrator”
  2. Right click on the icon and select “Properties”. Select the “Compatibility” tab and check the “Run this program as an administrator” check box. Now you can click the icon normally.

This fix is needed in all versions up to 1.20 which is the latest when this was written.

Error 80240029 Windows Defender Update

If windows update is failing to update with the error code 80240029. Take the following steps to fix it.

  1. Open the “Windows Update” from the control panel.
  2. Click “change settings” on the left bar.
  3. Turn windows update off completely. Never check for updates and uncheck use windows update.
  4. Go back to “Windows Update” and click “Check for updates” on the left side. This will get all the new updates you need, including those for Windows Defender.

After all this is done I was able to re-enable windows updates without any problems. I hope this helped you, it took me days to find the answer.

serverXMLHttp 0x80244019 crypt32 event 8

People I though I would save you sometime. If you are having problems using serverXML which will make windows update not work, the green bar will continue forever. And cause the crypt32 event id 8 to should up in the application log. And really cause every problem imaginable. Do no listen to those people who say, heheheheh disable the root server updates. Thats not the problem. The problem is with winHttp. The fix for me was to disable a proxy that I never set. To do that this simple command.

proxycfg -d

That should disable all proxies. After a quick restart everything started working. And finally things started working. If you can use XMLhttp but serverXMLhttp doesn’t work this will fix it. I hope this saves you all time. This all was happing on a Windows 2003 SP1 machine.

PHP + Mime Magic + Apache 2 = Disaster

While developing an application codenamed relay I had the job of figuring out what filetype files where. Now by first glance this seems easy.. oh just check the extension. Well this is a security risk. Because we thumbnailed images you could easily rename a executable to be a jpg and potentially executed code which is a big no no.

A little research later I found out about a mysterious “magic” file. And php had an extension for it. Ok so ill just uncomment the line in php.ini and it should work. So I did, I enable the extension. Added a magic mime line in php.ini as described by php.net Wrote a quick test.. something like

I ran it in the console using php.exe and it worked. Very excited I implamented it in my code ran in through the webserver and I wasn’t getting anything back. Blank.

BEGIN DEBUGIN

Ok. Echo it straight out to look at results… NOTHING… weird
Try it in the console again… works… weird
Check apache’s configuration for anything funky NOTHING … weird
Try a test script in apace similar to the one i wrote above… NOTHING
Time to look at phpinfo().... In apache mime_magic support was blank…. ok now we’re getting somewhere….
Check phpinfo() in the console ahh yes its enabled…..

Problem Identified

Now to fix it…. To the forums. Blah blah blah specifiy where the magic file is in the ini.. its there…. check ini settings in apache … its there… restart apache countless times… nothing….

Under mime there is a little warning… This extension has been deprecated as the PECL extension fileinfo provides the same functionality (and more) in a much cleaner way.

Cool we’re getting somewhere, so I got and installed fileinfo. Good thing there is barley any documentation. But I figured it out tested it in the console, and it told me I had a bad magic file. Reasearching I decided to try the magic file that came with apache. The didn’t give me the error but it told me every file type was “application/x-dpkg”... AWESOME it doesn’t work at all.

Weeks later

After using the extension to determine file types for a while

The saga continues. I do a bunch of crap, nothing seems to work. I download file.exe a GnuWin32 release. And try that out, and its a stand alone program that can correctly id files. Ok so i figured I’d just use the backticks ` and execute it. The thought of that made me angry just thinging about it And I guess I just suck but I could not make it work. BUT it did come with a magic file. I figured I would try it with the fileinfo extension….

Success

That worked, I just needed the correct magic file. Well the file.exe package can be downloaded here

Ahh SAP how you make me angry. BSIS 301 Business Enterprise Tech is a required course for my major which is MIS (Management Information Systems.) This whole class teaches you S.A.P. which may stand for sit and play or that may be a joke the teacher repeatitly tells. Regaurdless its a accounting program, there really should be no basis for me needing to learn it. Its one specific program, that I will probable never use again after school.

The teacher asked “why we are calling these by these”[abrevations] After a long pause he said “If you want answer to that question, you must know german language”

Key differences between perl and php

I used to be a die hard perl fan…. as php had nothing for me. But I was forced to learn php for several websites and oh man, it was easier. Ever since then about a year and half ago I have avoided perl for the most part. But here is where perl really excells.

  1. It can access files faster than php
  2. While uploading files it is possiable to first record the size of the file that is being downloaded. This is useful for an upload progress bar

Number 2 above is really the heart and sole of my re-kindled attraction to perl. Because you can record the save of the files on their way before they are done that means that the script is excuted before the uploaded files are finished. Perl also give you so much more power to do what you want with the input headers.

PHP has a vast number of built in functions, but these functions limit your abality to do truely specalized tasks.

In conclusion, perl is more hardcore. But php has a soft spot in my heart for those tender moments where perl is too rough

Figure Skating

It seems everytime I turn on the Olympics I see figure skating. Now… figure skating should not a an olympic sport. But if you do want it to be one, balet should be the summer version. These “routines” are all the same.. the differences are so suttle. We need sports were there are clear winners and no judges. And no Brokeback Olympians! Also I would like to see more trash talking of other countries. Ya… More trash talking

Coca-Cola in league with terrorists?

Now I have been known to hold a few grudges, but I think maybe it this would be a worth while one. I have also been known to have a fowl mouth at times. If you do not like bad words please read on so I can offend you, if not then what the fuck is Coke doing?

I just heard that Coca-Cola, yes the drink that is so patriotic that they got America do enjoy drinking drugs, has a drink they made and sell in the middle east called JIHAD. Now I say again what the $@&# and how have we not heard this?

I am too hungry to rant right now but I want people to reserach this and complain and throw stones at cars driving by to get this message out there. Sell your stock in coke, buy pepsi, drink Sam’s coke instead or something. Actually just drink any other brand you can. This is the most outrageous show of profiting off of and promoting of American hate. To make it worse they are promoting it in countries where people want to kill women and children so they can go have sex with as many women as they want when they die. Do something, and dont quit saying what the $@&#!
